Building Blocks by BOB LARBEY Produced by MARION NEWLANDS Performed in April 1997 |

They say Rome wasn't built in a day, as Jim and Mary Baxter would no doubt understand. They have engaged local builder David to put up a house extension for them. But it's the old story as far as David is concerned, with too many jobs on the go at once and too few workers to do them. As a result, chippie Brian and labourers Mark and Piper are constantly being hauled away from the Baxter job to do other work, and the wily David has to be at his smooth-talking best to explain to Mary and Jim why their extension is taking so long. The author, Bob Larbey, is best known for his TV work on The Good Life and Ever Deceasing Circles, and Building Blocks is very much in the same mould. It's an everyday suburban tale of frustration, lies and treachery and is also very funny. Our production was notable for the ingenuity of the stage design team to show the extension in various stages of completion through the course of the play, right through to the finished work. Separate components for the frontage were built and could be interchanged as necessary.
