Publisher Tim Spring tries to convince a wealthy American, P P Taskley, to support his ailing magazine. Tim also has to convince Taskley that he has a whole host of contributors to his periodical, when in actual fact there is only one–Mr Tim Spring himself. With the aid of his wife Katie, Tim enlists the help of a cast of oddball characters, some unwilling and others unwitting, to maintain the deception. And it doesn't all go according to plan...
