Produced by MARION NEWLANDS

Performed in April 2001

Middle aged bookseller Alec is planning some extra-marital high jinks in Spain with his assistant, Liz.  He manages to pack his wife Maggie off for a break of her own, promising to care for the dog, and everything seems set.

But as the poet once said, the best laid plans...  In Alec's case it is the other members of his family who throw the spanners into the works.

Alec's mother, Phoebe, has discharged herself from a nursing home and needs a new place to stay.  His son Jamie then turns up on the doorstep with a broken ankle, and to top it all his daughter Mandy arrives, very pregnant, and very determined not to go back to her boyfriend.

Will poor Alec ever get his nookie with Liz?

Eric Chappell will always be best known as the author of the television sitcom, Rising Damp, but he has written many other very funny works for the stage, of which Haywire is a prime example.
