Four women meet regularly in a local beauty parlour in the deep American South to swap the latest gossip and to offer each other support and comfort in the ups and downs of their daily lives. We watch as social worker M'Lynn and her daughter Shelby make plans for Shelby's wedding. The worldly wise Ouiser is ever ready to deliver sharp judgments on all and sundry, but particularly in the direction of the wealthy Clairee. Presiding over all is the owner of the parlour, Truvy, who can dish the latest dirt while offering the homeliest of advice. And we find out that her new assistant, the moony Annelle, has skeletons in the cupboard of her own. As events proceed and the women are faced with great personal challenges, they really do become the 'Steel Magnolias' of the play's title - feminine on the outside but with an inner strength of character.
